Abstract
Pastoral care is a ministry of presence and listening. The pastoral care of Catholics must include attention to sacramental desires. There are three sacraments commonly requested or desired by persons homebound or institutionalized: Eucharist, Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. In Roman Catholic tradition these sacraments are dependant on the service or availability of the ordained priesthood. Lay ministers with training function quite well in the ministry of presence and listening. They can facilitate the sacramental needs of Catholics by bringing Eucharist and calling a priest when necessary. Lay pastoral caregivers at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Newport News, Virginia are called Healing Ministers. Healing Ministers from Our lady of Mount Carmel are commissioned and sent out to visit and bring Eucharist to persons who are in hospitals, nursing facilities and private homes.
