    Abstract
    A half a century ago Guam began the laborious process of emerging from its cocoon. We are beginning to see signs of a beautiful butterfly struggling to set itself free. What will this creature be like? Has 300 years of forced isolation in its cocoon sapped its strength or will it soar proudly into the skies of the 21st century?
