Although I have had thirty years of experience in church ministry, that experience has been primarily with middle-income people. I am now a pastoral associate at St. Anthony’s Parish in Evansville, Indiana, a parish involved in a significant inner city ministry. The parish 1s presently establishing a Center for Family Life in the vacant school building. I am involved on the board for this project and have shared responsibility for initiating and carrying out the operation of a soup kitchen. One floor of the building will be operated by the St. Vincent de Paul Society as a shelter for homeless families. The board of the Center for Family Life is searching for opportunities for growth and ministry for these families and others who will use the Center. These opportunities could be offered in the classroom spaces available on the first floor of the building. I believe that I need more experience in relating to and ministering to low-income families and/or non-churched people such as I am likely to encounter in this ministry situation. 1 have been offered an opportunity to minister to such a group and to learn from this experience.en_US
