Abstract
I am concerned that the youth in my community do not understand some of the feasts and practices of the Catholic Church. Their lack of understanding and fear of questioning may have a negative affect on the future of this faith community. Without knowledge and understanding, the celebrations of the Church may become nothing more than obligations, or worse, days that are not important enough to acknowledge. The youth in our junior high at Central Catholic School are at a crucial age in their faith and personal formation. The group that I mainly work with is in Erik Erikson’s stage 4 or stage 5. It is important to have knowledge about these stages in order to be of service to these children. Stage 4, the latency phase, is described as a time when school is important to the children who are 6 to 12 years old. It is important to feel successful and this often happens through group activities, academics and peers. Problems occur when a child feels inferior to others. (Erikson, p. 98). Inferiority can occur when there is a lack of understanding in a person’s faith.
