Abstract
This research paper reflects on the issues surrounding the decreasing participation of young
athletes in Terre Haute. It focuses on issues such as;
-Financial struggles families face trying to pay the registration fees
-Lost revenue to local organizations
-Increase in juvenile crime rates
-Importance of physical activities in youths
-Processes required to begin a nonprofit organization
The creation of the Youth Athletic Organization of Terre Haute (YAO), a non-profit entity will
assist low income families with the registration fees associated with sports participation at the
Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club (THBGC) and Vigo County Youth Football (VCYF). Our
mission is:
The Youth Athletic Organization of Terre Haute will provide the opportunity for low income
youths to participate in organized sports programs. These opportunities will give the youth of
Terre Haute a chance to learn sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership skills that will be a
positive outlet for the athlete and our community.
The YAO will contribute up to 30% of funds collected in the first year to the Terre Haute Boys
and Girls Club and 70% to the Vigo County Youth Football League. The YAO will obtain
funding each year by applying for grants and private/personal donations.
